The race to lead the Grenoble Alpes Métropole executive has entered its final stages, with a new leadership team expected to be elected by April 23, 2026. Following weeks of behind-the-scenes maneuvering, the process of selecting the head of the metropolitan authority is now moving toward a conclusion, according to reporting from Le Dauphiné Libéré on April 9, 2026.
The selection of the new executive follows the renewal of the metropolitan council, a process triggered by the municipal elections held in March 2026. According to the official Grenoble Alpes Métropole administration, the metropolitan council is composed of 119 counselors who are designated by the municipal councils of the 49 member communes. These member municipalities include Grenoble, Gières, Meylan, Vif, Échirolles, Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Eybens, Poisat, Bresson, Corenc, La Tronche, Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux, Fontanil-Cornillon, Saint-Égrève, Veurey-Voroize, Noyarey, Fontaine, Sassenage, Seyssinet-Pariset, Seyssins, Le Pont-de-Claix, Claix, Vizille, Champagnier, Jarrie, and Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, among others.
The official installation of the new executive is scheduled to take place by the end of April 2026. Until this transition is complete, the presidency of Grenoble Alpes Métropole is held by Christophe Ferrari, who also serves as the Mayor of Le Pont-de-Claix.
Political Strategies and Leadership Contenders
The competition for the presidency is heavily influenced by the strategic alignments of the left-wing parties. Analysis from Exprimeo indicates that the LFI-Greens alliance has methodically organized its approach to the 2026 elections. In the city of Grenoble, the list is led by Laurence Ruffin. The strategy employed by the LFI-Greens involves presenting a public image of a family of the left
to provide a soothing portrait to the electorate, while utilizing Melenchonist militancy as the primary electoral network.

Éric Piolle, the Green Party mayor who previously led Grenoble and established the city as a laboratory for environmental reforms, is also a key figure in the race. Piolle’s candidacy for the presidency of the Métropole is contingent upon the success of Laurence Ruffin’s list in Grenoble. If Ruffin secures victory in the city, Piolle’s path to the metropolitan presidency becomes viable.
Piolle intends to apply the same ideological framework to the Métropole that he previously implemented in the city of Grenoble. His objectives for the metropolitan administration include the development of a significant number of social housing units in peri-urban areas and the modification of public funding mechanisms to favor the city center.
Regional Political Landscape
The political environment within the métropole is characterized by a sharp divide between the left and right coalitions. Within the local left, the Socialist Party (PS) has seen its influence diminish, with the LFI-Greens component now holding the primary position of power. This shift was evidenced during the partial legislative elections for Grenoble-Meylan.
Conversely, the political right is described as being unified regarding its core principles and substance, yet divided in its approach to the elections. The outcome of the metropolitan presidency will depend not only on the results in Grenoble but also on the election results in the second crown of the métropole, specifically whether the right can win more communes or if the far-left achieves its expected breakthroughs in those territories.
This transition comes as Grenoble continues to be viewed as a pioneering site for ecological policy. Having become the first major French city to elect a Green Party mayor, the city has focused on cutting CO2 emissions and pollution. Reflecting on the necessity of these shifts, Piolle previously stated:
The time has come to radically change the rules of the game.
Éric Piolle
The final composition of the Grenoble Alpes Métropole executive and the identity of its new president will be officially confirmed and installed by the end of April 2026.
