MasterChef’s Pressure Test Returns After Hiatus
After a period of absence, the Pressure Test has returned to the episode of MasterChef: Dynamic Duos, marking the first of the season. The test serves as an alternative elimination challenge, typically following a Team Challenge, according to information from the MasterChef Wiki.
The return of the Pressure Test comes after a stretch where the show moved away from the format, reportedly during a period of “gimmick seasons, judging changes and Covid-related abnormalities.” For its first ten seasons, the Pressure Test was consistently used to determine which contestants would be eliminated, but it was then discontinued without explanation.
In the most recent iteration, the losing teams from the previous challenge faced the Pressure Test. The challenge involved a Mystery Box made of chocolate, which contestants were required to smash and use as the key ingredient in a dessert. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry, and Joe Bastianich evaluated the desserts to determine who would avoid elimination.
The episode featured five duos – Timothy and Athena, Azu and Javier, Darce and Courtney, Kayla and Ryan-Kate, and Tonne and Cait – competing in the Pressure Test after losing the previous challenge. Rachel and Julio, Adam and Joel, Tina and Aivan, Jessica and Jesse, and Zach and Michelle, members of the winning Red Team, observed the competition.
The Pressure Test is described as “the dreaded Pressure Test” and is a significant part of the MasterChef competition. It’s used as another form of elimination challenge, offering contestants another opportunity to stay in the competition after facing a Team Challenge.
Recently, the final Pressure Test of the season took place, challenging three remaining duos to create a three-course meal. This test was particularly demanding, requiring each duo to replicate an appetizer from Joe Bastianich’s restaurant, an entree from Tiffany Derry’s restaurant, and a dessert from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant.
The reintroduction of the Pressure Test has been met with enthusiasm, as it is considered one of the show’s best challenges. The format provides a high-stakes environment for contestants to demonstrate their culinary skills and creativity under pressure.
