McLaren’s Tire Strategy under Scrutiny
Imola, Italy – McLaren faced strategic questions following the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, specifically regarding their handling of tire strategies between drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Piastri, running ahead of Norris before the final restart, was on older tires. While norris eventually overtook his teammate, Max Verstappen had already established a significant lead.
Team principal Andrea Stella told sky that the team considered swapping the drivers to give Norris, with his fresher tires, a better chance at challenging Verstappen. ”We definitely thought about it,” Stella said. he added that all options were explored, but ultimately, the team decided to allow Piastri to pursue his own prospect. Stella explained, “we wanted him to get his own chances at the restart, and we also assume that lando, if he could overtake Max, would have been able to overtake Oscar with ease.”
Stella conceded that Norris’s pace might not have been sufficient to overtake Verstappen regardless.”If the speed delta had been sufficient, things would actually have done themselves,” he stated.
Hamilton Praises Ferrari’s Performance
Lewis Hamilton expressed satisfaction with his fourth-place finish, acknowledging Ferrari’s strong performance. Speaking to Sky, Hamilton said, “I definitely didn’t expect that we would be fourth today… But the car felt really great.”
He lauded his team’s strategy and communication. “The team did fantastic work with its strategy. They were flawless,” Hamilton stated, adding that his communication with his race engineer was excellent. ”I was calm and I think he was calm too, and the team implemented the strategy calmly, and the pit stops were great. mega,” he said, wishing the race had continued for a few more laps, possibly allowing him to reach the podium.
Leclerc Avoids Penalty After Albon incident
Charles Leclerc escaped a penalty after an examination into whether he had improperly gained an advantage. Leclerc voluntarily ceded fifth position to Alexander Albon after the investigation had begun. Race officials stated, “Before we were able to complete our investigations, Auto 16 voluntarily returned the position to defuse the alleged violation. Under these circumstances, we did not take any further measures.”
Despite Leclerc’s action, the incident indirectly impacted Albon’s race, potentially costing him a chance to challenge Hamilton for fourth. Ferrari ultimately benefited, securing fourth and sixth positions as a team.
Norris Content with Team Strategy
Lando Norris voiced no concerns regarding McLaren’s decision not to impose team orders.Speaking to Sky, he stated, “I had the better tires, but I didn’t expect anything.”
“Of course I lose time and he loses time,” Norris acknowledged, referring to the battle with Piastri. He added that such situations are normal when fighting “for a championship.” Norris concluded, “I think we mastered it well and the team did a good job.”
Norris admitted that a victory was unlikely, regardless of strategy. “I think second place was the best we could achieve today,” he said, reiterating that Verstappen was simply “too fast.”
Haas Endures Tough race
Haas experienced a challenging race, compounding earlier setbacks. While Esteban Ocon faced mechanical issues, Oliver Bearman initially benefited from a Virtual Safety Car (VSC).
Bearman explained, “The Brit stopped and came out of Russell, and he was on P7, so we had a good race ahead of us.” However, a pit stop error proved costly.”My bike was not attached properly at the pit stop,” he reported, forcing him to stop again and effectively ending his chances. Bearman lamented,”The pace was good, the car felt good all weekend,” expressing frustration that the team couldn’t capitalize on their potential after a disappointing qualifying session.
Alonso Laments unlucky Race
Fernando Alonso described himself as the unluckiest driver, failing to score points despite starting from fifth.”The car was very strong today,” Alonso said, noting that he was initially faster than George Russell in the Mercedes. However, a pit stop before the VSC negated his advantage.
Alonso explained that the VSC allowed other drivers to gain a “free stop” and fresh tires, effectively ending his race. “I think 99 of 100 scenarios of the race were in order for us,” he said, adding that the one unfavorable scenario materialized, continuing a trend of misfortune throughout the season.
Marko: Red Bull’s Pace Decisive
Helmut Marko, speaking to ORF, attributed Red Bull’s victory to superior pace. “We were just faster today. We were at least as good in tire wear [as McLaren],” Marko said.He highlighted Verstappen’s performance after the safety car, noting, “Then [Max] yes, a second and more per round drove away.”
Marko added, “[It] is the first time that he had a car, more or less for a year that is in balance that it is doing what he wants.” He concluded, “And then you see God such a result.” Verstappen now trails Piastri by 22 points in the world Championship standings.
Verstappen Emphasizes Importance of Red Bull’s Victory
Verstappen expressed pride in his team’s performance after securing his second win of the season. “I am incredibly proud of everyone. It was a very significant week for us. The car performed well,” he said.
He highlighted the car’s pace, pit stops, and overall execution of the race.Looking ahead to the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen cautioned, ”Monaco will be a entirely different route next week… It will also be a big challenge. But I just want to enjoy it.” The imola victory marked Red Bull’s 400th Formula 1 race.
Piastri Acknowledges Mistakes
Oscar Piastri admitted to making errors during the race. “It was a good maneuver from Max,” he said, referring to losing the lead at the start. He described the result as “disappointing” and acknowledged “some false decisions” after the start.
“It was without a question not our best Sunday,” Piastri said, noting that an early pit stop left him without fresh tires at the end of the safety car period. ”So there are definitely a lot of things you have to look at and check,” he concluded, despite maintaining his lead in the World Championship, albeit with a reduced margin over Norris and Verstappen.
Norris Concedes Red Bull’s Superiority
Lando Norris acknowledged Red Bull’s dominance at Imola. “Max drove a good race and we couldn’t keep up,” Norris said, adding, “We did what we could.”
He considered second place “a good race” and expressed satisfaction with McLaren’s double podium finish. “Of course we would like to fight Max, but they were too good for us today,” Norris admitted.
