Why Georgia Is Now the Best Team in College Football After Beating Alabama

Georgia defeated Alabama 20-17 on October 10, 2026, at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, marking the program’s first road win over the Crimson Tide since 2007. According to cbssports.com, head coach Kirby Smart acknowledged the volatile nature of the conference immediately following the victory.

Georgia Secures Historic Tuscaloosa Victory

Senior quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 passing yards, two total touchdowns, and one interception. Stockton scored on a 14-yard run to cap off an eight-play, 75-yard drive coming out of halftime, and later delivered a 3rd-and-7 completion to Craig Dandridge under tight coverage. Kirby Smart earned his first regular-season win against his former employer after holding an all-time record of 2-7 against the Crimson Tide prior to the game.

Broadcast Analysts Differ on the Top Team in College Football

Ahead of the kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium, ESPN’s College GameDay featured differing opinions on the nation’s top program. As reported by si.com, analyst Kirk Herbstreit named Miami the best team in college football during the pregame show, pointing to quarterback Darian Mensah’s efficiency and defensive resilience through injuries. Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban agreed with Herbstreit’s assessment on the broadcast, stating That’s who I would pick at this point while adding that he was not giving up on the Crimson Tide. Meanwhile, cbssports.com positioned Georgia as the definitive top team in the country following their performance on the field against Alabama.

Upcoming SEC Schedule and Championship Implications

The broader Southeastern Conference schedule continues to produce unexpected results across the league standings. A week after defeating Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss squad, the Rebels fell 52-28 to Florida, while preseason College Football Playoff hopeful LSU dropped to 4-2 after a loss to Kentucky. cbssports.com notes that if Georgia maintains its current trajectory, Stockton warrants consideration as a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York. Both Georgia and Alabama navigate demanding conference schedules in the coming weeks, leaving open the possibility of a rematch in the SEC Championship or the College Football Playoff.
