Shaquille O’Neal has publicly rejected the label of celebrity, stating he renounced that identity approximately ten years ago because he finds the behavior of celebrities to be strange and disconnected from his values.
The former Los Angeles Lakers center explained his stance in a recent interview, saying, “J’ai renoncé à être une célébrité il y a environ dix ans, parce que ces gens-là sont bizarres,” which translates to “I renounced being a celebrity about ten years ago, because those people are weird.”
These celebrities are going freaking crazy and I don’t want to be one. I denounce my celebrity-ness today. I’m done with it.
Shaquille O’Neal, speaking to the New York Post
O’Neal emphasized that his rejection of the celebrity label stems from his belief that fame does not make someone inherently better than others. He stated that despite his success and wealth, he never wanted to be seen as superior to anyone else.
He further explained his perspective by saying, “I came from nothing. But, just because I made it doesn’t mean I’m bigger than you, smarter than you — just because I have more money doesn’t mean I’m better than you. I’ve never been that way and I never will be that way.”
The four-time NBA champion expressed a desire to be remembered not for his fame or accomplishments on the court, but for his character. He said he wants people to describe him simply as “a nice guy” rather than being associated with negative stereotypes often linked to celebrity culture.
When they talk about Shaq, what do you say? ‘He’s a nice guy.’ Because what else can you be? You’re either nice or you’re the A-word, and I definitely won’t be looked at as the A-word.
Shaquille O’Neal
O’Neal criticized the behavior of many celebrities, particularly how they treat others and conduct themselves in public. He referenced personal experiences where fans’ phones were taken by entourages after taking pictures, contrasting that with his own approach of kindness, and accessibility.
He stated, “I want people to say, ‘Bro, he’s nice. He didn’t have an entourage. His people didn’t take my phone because I took a picture and threw it.’” This reflects his commitment to remaining grounded and treating others with respect regardless of his status.
