A study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus shows that teamwork and face-to-face communication improve patient care in hospitals. The research appears in the Journal of Interprofessional Care.

Lead author Dr. Katarzyna Mastalerz emphasizes that how teams communicate affects patient care. Regular in-person conversations among doctors and team members build trust and collaboration, leading to faster and better patient care.

The study focused on “clinical microsystems,” which are small healthcare teams working together daily. Researchers interviewed 51 resident doctors and hospitalists at a large hospital. They found three important factors that contribute to the success of these teams:

  1. Workflow Efficiency: Doctors noted that working in the same area makes sharing information and addressing patient needs faster and easier.

  2. Strong Work Relationships: Frequent face-to-face interactions create a comfortable environment for discussion, leading to better teamwork and problem-solving.

  3. Communication Preferences: While technology like pagers and secure messaging is common, doctors prefer face-to-face talks. They feel that in-person conversations lead to better understanding and improve digital communications later.

As hospitals increasingly rely on secure text messaging, Dr. Mastalerz warns that less face-to-face interaction may harm teamwork and patient care. The study stresses the importance of maintaining personal communication and teamwork, even with growing technology use.

This research has implications for hospital leaders and healthcare providers. By creating environments for close collaboration, hospitals can ensure that patients receive high-quality care, even as technology in healthcare grows.
