Why is the Syrian front on fire now and for whose benefit has a military expert revealed the scenes?
Over the past few days, fighting has intensified on the Syrian front. This escalation followed a recent agreement in Lebanon and the withdrawal of the Syrian army from many areas. The capture of several towns and military bases in northern Syria, including Abu al-Duhur Airport in Idlib, surprised many, including the Syrian people.
The sudden increase in conflict raises important questions: Why did it flare up now? Who benefits from it? What are the roles of various actors involved?
Major General Staff Mohamed Refat Gad, an Egyptian military expert, explained that the Syrian conflict involves not just local factions, but also regional and international powers. Each side has its own interests, whether that involves weakening the opposition, increasing influence, or protecting national security.
Iran aims to strengthen its military presence in Syria, as part of its broader regional goals. By keeping the conflict ongoing, Iran seeks to consolidate its influence, especially near Israel’s borders.
On the other hand, Israel focuses on preventing Iran and Hezbollah from establishing a permanent military presence near its borders, particularly in the Golan Heights. The U.S. also plays a role, seeking to limit Russian and Iranian influence in Syria while ensuring stability for Israel. The ongoing conflict provides a reason for the U.S. military to remain in the region.
While Israel is not directly involved in the conflict between the Syrian government and opposition, it has targeted Iranian and allied positions within Syria. Historically, Israel has not supported the Syrian opposition but does not want Iran to dominate Syria. Reports suggest that Israel has had some indirect contact with opposition factions, particularly in southern Syria, to maintain security along its border.
Russia has consistently supported the Syrian government since the conflict began in 2011. It intervened directly in 2015, using air power to help the Syrian army. Russia supplies advanced weapons to the government and has trained Syrian forces. The expert believes that Russia prefers to provide arms and advice rather than engage directly. It also seeks to use diplomatic channels to prevent foreign intervention against the Syrian regime.
The armed opposition’s control of Aleppo indicates a significant challenge for the Syrian government. It means that a large area is effectively outside the government’s authority. This situation disrupts the government’s ability to manage security, impose laws, and access resources, allowing armed groups to gain strength.
