Matt Crocker has resigned from his position as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation with immediate effect. The announcement was made on April 14, 2026, less than two months before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
Crocker is departing to take a new role with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). While U.S. Soccer stated that Crocker was leaving to pursue another opportunity in international soccer
, sources confirmed to ESPN that the new position is a similar role within the Saudi Arabian federation.
The timing of the departure has drawn attention due to the proximity of the FIFA Men’s World Cup, which begins on June 11. One federation source described the move as weird timing
, although another source indicated that the opportunity in Saudi Arabia was one that Crocker can’t pass up
.
It has been a privilege to be part of U.S. Soccer during such an important period for the sport in this country. I’m grateful for the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with across the Federation, from our coaches and players to our technical and administrative staff. I’m proud of what’s been built together and confident the team in place will continue to move the game forward and drive success on and off the field.

Crocker’s Tenure and Impact
Crocker, a Welsh national, joined U.S. Soccer in the summer of 2023. He previously held positions at the English Football Association and with Southampton. He took over the sporting director role after Earnie Stewart left the federation earlier in 2023 to become the sporting director for PSV Eindhoven.
During his time with the federation, Crocker was central to several high-profile coaching appointments. Before officially beginning his full-time duties, he was involved in the decision to re-hire Gregg Berhalter as the coach of the U.S. Men’s national team.
Following that, Crocker recruited Emma Hayes to lead the U.S. Women’s national team in the fall of 2023. He is also credited with the hiring of Mauricio Pochettino for the men’s national team.
The U.S. Way Strategy
A primary focus of Crocker’s remit was the development of long-term plans for the sporting department. This effort culminated in the U.S. Way
strategy, a framework designed to align all levels of soccer within the country.
Despite his sudden exit, federation sources suggest that the foundation for this vision is already established. One source stated that the plans are currently in place and that the federation is now in a position to execute those initiatives, describing the status of the U.S. Way as all systems go
.
Operational Transition and Future Outlook
To manage the vacancy left by Crocker, U.S. Soccer has turned to Dan Helfrich. Helfrich, who was hired as the federation’s chief operating officer in November, will now provide executive oversight and support across the federation’s sporting operations.

The departure comes at a critical juncture for U.S. Soccer as the United States serves as a co-host for the upcoming World Cup. Added to the transition in the sporting director role is the fact that Mauricio Pochettino’s contract as men’s coach is set to expire after the tournament concludes.
Parallel to these leadership changes, the federation is preparing to open a new 200-acre training center and office complex in May 2026. The facility, located in Fayetteville, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb, will feature 17 fields.
