Why Most Grand Theft Auto Games Are Unplayable on PS5

Owners of a PlayStation 5 cannot play Grand Theft Auto 4, alongside 10 other titles from across the franchise’s history. Out of 16 Grand Theft Auto games including major expansions, 11 remain completely inaccessible on the current PlayStation, the platform most closely associated with the series.

The missing catalog includes the first Grand Theft Auto and its expansions, GTA 2, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Chinatown Wars, and GTA 4 expansions The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Major competitors maintain their back catalogs far more effectively. Nintendo makes 15 of 21 mainline Zelda games available on its current platform, Switch 2, while PS5 hosts 14 of 16 numbered Final Fantasy entries spanning 36 years.

Platform Disparities and Missing Eras

Rockstar Games has kept only GTA 5, GTA Online, and the early 2000s PS2 trilogy—GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas—available on all current-generation hardware. Players face slightly better options on PC and Xbox. Microsoft’s backward-compatibility engineers kept GTA 4 and its expansions playable on those platforms.

Meanwhile, the 2D games that launched the series are completely unavailable now. Players must locate original physical discs for older PlayStation consoles or source illegal PC copies and apply community mods. Handheld titles like GTA Advance and Vice City Stories share a similar fate, though Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars appear randomly on mobile platforms.

The Reception of the Definitive Edition Remaster

Rockstar’s approach to its classic titles contrasts sharply with industry peers like Nintendo, Bethesda, and Blizzard, which treat back catalogs as community services and revenue streams. The 2021 release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition faced severe criticism. The outsourced remastering was technically unpolished and artistically inconsistent.

That reception stood in stark contrast to Bethesda’s 2025 remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Rockstar appeared surprised by the harsh backlash toward its remastered trilogy. Although subsequent patches have made improvements, the launch exposed a relative lack of institutional care for the studio’s classic games.

Shifting Studio Priorities

This disconnect stems from a fundamental evolution in how Rockstar operates. During the 2000s and early 2010s, the developer released 14 games in 12 years. In the 17 years since then, the studio has delivered only two entries, with a third soon to be.

The slowdown reflects rising development costs and complexity, but it also marks a strategic pivot.
