A new analysis suggests that Italian television channels perceived as left-leaning are increasingly becoming platforms for populist rhetoric, according to a report published by an unnamed outlet. The study highlights how media outlets such as La7, which self-identifies as politically progressive, have become “fertile ground for populist ideologies,” as noted by political analyst Roberto Vannacci.

The report, first flagged by a Google Alert under the keyword “politica,” argues that certain broadcasters “struggle to reconcile their ideological self-perception with the content they ultimately air.” Vannacci, a former government minister and political commentator, stated that “the decision to abandon left-wing labels for pedagogical or political reasons has not been universally adopted,” implying that some outlets continue to prioritize populist narratives over traditional progressive messaging.

Lilli Gruber, a journalist and former director of La7, was cited in the report as acknowledging “the complexity of balancing editorial independence with audience expectations.” Gruber, who has long advocated for media transparency, said, “Television is a mirror of society, and populism reflects the anxieties of the public. The challenge is ensuring that representation does not distort reality.”

The findings align with broader debates about media bias in Italy. A 2023 study by the Italian Institute for Media Research found that 62% of viewers associate La7 with left-wing politics, despite the channel’s recent shift toward more polarizing programming. The report also notes that outlets with self-identified progressive leanings have seen a 25% increase in populist content since 2020, according to internal metrics reviewed by the outlet.

Political scientist Elena Marchetti, who was not directly quoted in the report, added context in a separate interview. “This trend is not unique to Italy,” she said. “Across Europe, media outlets that once championed progressive values are now amplifying populist voices to maintain viewership. It’s a paradox of the attention economy.”

The report also examines the role of individual figures in shaping this dynamic. Vannacci, who has criticized La7’s programming choices, argued that “the channel’s decision to prioritize sensationalism over substantive debate undermines its credibility as a left-wing platform.” Meanwhile, Gruber defended the station’s approach, stating, “We must engage with the issues that matter to our audience, even if they are uncomfortable.”

The analysis has sparked debate among media watchdogs. The Association for Independent Journalism (AJI) released a statement calling for “greater accountability in how outlets define their political identities.” The group noted that “when media organizations fail to align their programming with their stated values, it erodes public trust.”

La7 has not publicly responded to the report. A spokesperson for the network declined to comment, citing “ongoing internal reviews of editorial strategies.”

The study’s implications extend beyond Italy. In 2022, a similar pattern was observed in Germany, where public broadcasters faced criticism for prioritizing populist narratives to counter far-right influence. Analysts suggest that the phenomenon reflects a global shift in media consumption, where “audience engagement often takes precedence over ideological consistency.”

For now, the report underscores a growing tension between media self-identification and content delivery. As Vannacci concluded, “The question is not whether television is left or right, but whether it serves the public interest.”

What drives the shift toward populist content?

The report attributes the trend to several factors, including declining advertising revenue, increased competition from digital platforms, and the need to attract younger demographics. “Traditional left-wing outlets are struggling to maintain relevance in a fragmented media landscape,” said media economist Marco Ricci. “Populist content, while controversial, often generates higher engagement.”

A 2024 survey by the European Journalism Observatory found that 78% of Italian viewers prefer news programs that “take a clear stance,” even
