auto-brewery syndrome is a rare disease where the body naturally produces alcohol, even leading some patients to feel “intoxicated” without consuming any alcohol. While several case studies have been published, the condition remains poorly understood. Though, doctors at Mass General Brigham have made a significant breakthrough, identifying the gut bacteria and metabolic pathways responsible for the phenomenon.

Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae: Gut bacteria Linked to Auto-Brewery Syndrome
To study this rare disorder, researchers gathered 22 patients with the syndrome, along with individuals living with them who were not affected, and 22 healthy participants as a control group.
The team compared the composition and activity of the gut microbiome in these three groups through stool analysis. They initially showed that samples from those with the syndrome contained substantially more ethanol than the others. “This finding highlights the possibility of developing a stool test that would facilitate and improve diagnosis.”
