Why Sony Can’t Launch Its Own Spider-Man Franchise While Marvel Controls the MCU

Sony Pictures cannot launch a competing live-action Spider-Man franchise while Marvel Studios remains involved in producing the character’s films, according to insider John Campea as reported by MaxBlizz. The restriction exists because Disney and Marvel Studios seek to avoid overlapping live-action versions of the character during their ongoing production partnership.

Sony Pictures currently holds the exclusive film and live-action rights to approximately 900 characters from the Spider-Man franchise. Despite this ownership, the studio’s ability to utilize these assets independently is limited by its current arrangement with Marvel Studios. Campea stated that Sony could potentially launch its own separate live-action franchise if it ended the existing deal with Marvel Studios.

This rights conflict explains why Sony did not produce standalone movies featuring Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield between the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to Campea.

MCU Integration and Character Rights

The partnership between Sony and Marvel Studios may extend beyond the main Spider-Man films. MaxBlizz reports that the deal could allow Marvel to utilize other Sony-controlled characters within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This potential access includes characters such as Kraven, Norman Osborn, and Kingpin.

Under such an arrangement, Norman Osborn could be introduced into the MCU without immediately assuming the role of the Green Goblin. Similarly, Kingpin could transition from Marvel’s television projects into theatrical MCU films.

Vincent D’Onofrio expressed interest in a cinematic confrontation between his character, Kingpin, and Spider-Man. D’Onofrio noted the complexity of the situation, stating, If Sony and Marvel ever get their sh*t together, maybe. It’s a complicated rights issue. Hope so.

Failed Crossover Plans and Box Office Performance

Tom Holland revealed in an interview with Happy Sad Confused that Sony previously considered merging its Spider-Man spin-off universe with the MCU. Holland stated that while the crossover was on the cards, the two entities just never found the right time to do so.

Holland clarified that he was never forced into any film projects he did not want to join during these discussions.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $1.67 billion at the worldwide box office within two weeks of release. According to MaxBlizz, the film is tracking to exceed $2.5 billion during its theatrical run, which would likely make it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time.
