Legacy Hits Crowd Out the Emmy Ballot

The television animation industry faces a glaring disconnect at the Emmy Awards, where foundational hits dominate nominations while innovative newcomers go unrecognized.

America’s contribution to television animation over the past thirty years has changed how audiences view comedy, tragedy, and the modern family. Series like Fox’s The Simpsons, currently in its 37th season, and Comedy Central’s South Park, at 28 seasons, pioneered satirical storytelling. Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, nine seasons deep, reshaped comedic tragedy. Yet these long-running staples continue to crowd out fresh competition on the awards stage, alongside Bob’s Burgers, which recently completed its 20th season.

Shutting Out Innovative New Series

Several critically acclaimed and innovative new series receive no recognition from the Television Academy. Excluded titles include Owen Dennis’s dark sci-fi series Among Us on Paramount+, Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s time-jumping family series Long Story Short on Netflix, and Joe Cappa’s Adult Swim single-dad comedy Haha, You Clowns. While Adult Swim’s Smiling Friends and Star Wars: Visions secure occasional nominations, they often appear tokenistic next to legacy programs.

Flawed Mechanics Favor Familiar Titles

Industry analysis attributes the calcified nomination list to voting mechanics. Unlike other categories that judge an entire show, the Emmys award a specific single episode. This structure heavily disadvantages newer, unconventional series that require multiple episodes to establish their comedic rhythms and narrative styles, driving voters back to familiar titles like The Simpsons and South Park.

Restrictive Boundaries Leave Out Global Hits

Furthermore, critics point to international omissions, noting that universally watched programs like Bluey remain excluded from primetime Emmy eligibility due to restrictive category boundaries.

A Decade-Long Stagnation on the Awards Stage

No show should so regularly take a place on the Emmys stage. The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers have been nominated every year since the Obama days. Nothing is that good for that long.
