Florida Panthers Poised to Repeat as Stanley Cup Champions
Updated June 3,2025
The quest for Connor McDavid to hoist the Stanley Cup may face another setback as the Florida Panthers are favored to win it all again. Despite McDavid’s remarkable regular-season accolades, including multiple scoring titles and MVP awards, the Panthers stand in the way of the Edmonton Oilers’ first stanley Cup since 1990.
After the Florida Panthers deprived McDavid of his Stanley Cup win last season, they appear poised to repeat their success. While many believe this is McDavid’s moment, several factors suggest otherwise.
The Oilers have shown improvement, boasting a deeper roster and increased scoring, averaging 4.06 goals per game. Their 5-on-5 defense has also tightened up, reducing goals allowed per 60 minutes from 2.55 to 1.89 as last postseason. A stronger penalty kill is expected with Mattias Ekholm’s return.
However, the Panthers have also elevated their game, becoming an even more formidable team. Their goal differential has substantially improved, and they are scoring more while conceding fewer goals. At 5-on-5, they’ve increased their goals per 60 minutes from 2.39 to 3.53. Key mid-season acquisitions, including Seth Jones and Brad Marchand, have further bolstered their lineup.
Marchand’s addition has solidified the Panthers’ third line, contributing to their overall depth. Alongside Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen, Marchand has helped the line achieve impressive shot attempt percentages and goal statistics. This allows the Panthers to maintain a strong top-six forward group, featuring combinations like Aleksander Barkov with Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett with Matthew Tkachuk.
Niko Mikkola’s elevated performance has also been a key factor in the Panthers’ defensive improvements. His pairing with Jones has yielded better results compared to last season’s pairing with Brandon Montour.
“Meeks has been a beast. All playoffs,he’s everywhere,” Marchand said.”I don’t think he gets enough credit. He’s extremely tough to play against. Then when you play with him, and you realize that he’s not flashy, but he closes so fast, he’s always on top of guys and he’s physical.”
What’s next
With an improved roster and the confidence of a Stanley Cup victory, the Florida Panthers appear well-positioned to repeat as champions, possibly delaying Connor McDavid’s Stanley Cup aspirations.
