I chose to play in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa competition for a shorter season. Most overseas seasons last six to seven months, which overlaps with the WNBA season. After my shoulder surgery last year, I wanted a more manageable schedule. My teammate Tamari and I decided together to come here to play and enjoy a shorter timeframe.

Understanding the League and New Zealand

Before coming, I knew little about the league. My Seattle teammate Ezi Magbebor, who hails from New Zealand, described the country’s beauty. I learned the league was relatively new and had to locate New Zealand on the map. I brought too many bags, which created challenges at the airport. Unlike in the U.S., people here were eager to help me, making me feel welcomed and safe.

New Zealand Basketball vs. WNBA

Playing in New Zealand feels less restrictive compared to the WNBA. In the WNBA, players often have to stick to specific roles and navigate team dynamics. Here, I enjoy more freedom to play my game and make mistakes, which enhances my fun and confidence.

My Background and Love for Basketball

I was born in Dallas and raised in Ohio. My mom works in fraud detection at Chase Bank, while my dad has done various jobs, including coaching. He always expected one of his daughters to play basketball, especially since I showed a love for it. I grew attached to the sport because of our bond.

Excitement for Women’s Basketball Growth

Women’s basketball is gaining popularity, especially with players like Caitlin Clark drawing attention. I enjoy seeing increased viewership and discussions around the game. People now recognize our talent.

Career Highlights and Future Goals

Being drafted ninth overall in the WNBA was monumental for me. I aspire to achieve All-Star status, join the All-Defensive team, win a gold Olympic medal, and secure a WNBA championship, including here. I have compiled a detailed list of my goals and aim to explore the world.

Connection with NBA Players

I work out with some NBA players, and relationships between NBA and WNBA athletes have improved. We support each other, with even NFL players attending our games.

Experience in New Zealand

I know rugby is a significant sport here. I’ve watched games on TV, but I want to attend a live match. My schedule has kept me busy, but I’ve enjoyed sightseeing and relaxing at the beach.

LGBTQ+ Representation in Basketball

I mentioned before that many WNBA players identify as gay or bisexual. This reality exists, but my sexuality doesn’t define my motivation for playing. The issue of diversity remains complex. Societal acceptance is still challenging, particularly with figures like Donald Trump impacting LGBTQ+ rights.

Concerns About Future Societal Changes

Trump’s potential return to the presidency raises concerns for many, especially given his past behavior. While I worry, I focus on what I can control and stay prepared.

Key Life Advice

My mother’s advice was vital: teach people how to treat you. This means having self-belief and awareness of one’s worth. Confidence is crucial, and individuals should stay true to themselves.

Advice for Young Athletes

My primary advice is to believe in themselves. Enjoy the game, especially when young, as it becomes more serious with age. Confidence, hard work, and consistency are essential. Sacrifice is often necessary for success.

Overcoming Doubts

Basketball has its ups and downs. I’ve faced days when I considered quitting, wanting to join friends for regular activities. However, my passion for the sport kept me focused. I learned to persevere and stress the importance of mindset.

Future in New Zealand

While I can’t discuss future plans, I intend to return to New Zealand to play. I will recommend it to other players seeking a good environment and a shorter season.
