Many yoga practitioners experience involuntary trembling or shaking while holding specific poses. While this sensation can be frustrating or discouraging, especially for beginners, it is often a standard physiological response to the physical demands of a practice.

Muscle shaking during yoga is frequently a sign of muscle fatigue. This occurs when muscles are worked without sufficient rest, causing them to weaken and shake involuntarily. For example, holding a plank pose for an extended period can trigger this response as the muscles become fatigued.

The Causes of Muscle Tremors

Several distinct factors contribute to the onset of shaking during a yoga session. Understanding these triggers can help practitioners manage their practice more effectively.

Muscle fatigue is one of the most common drivers. According to exercise physiologist and yoga teacher Jessica Matthews, shaking or quivering muscles during difficult poses are a physiological and neurological response to working hard and signal muscular fatigue.

Poor alignment can also lead to instability. When the body is not correctly aligned, muscles must work harder to maintain the pose, which accelerates fatigue and increases the likelihood of involuntary shaking.

Hydration levels play a critical role in muscle function. Dehydration can disrupt the balance of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, which are responsible for carrying the electrical impulses that allow muscles to contract. When these electrolytes are imbalanced, muscles may not fire correctly, resulting in quivering.

Other potential triggers include nervous system responses and, in some contexts, an energy release that occurs when the body feels safe while activating muscles.

Safety and Management Strategies

Determining whether it is safe to continue holding a pose while shaking requires mindfulness of the body’s signals. While shaking is often a normal part of working hard, it can also signal that the body has reached its limit.

Practitioners are encouraged to monitor their breath. If a person cannot inhale and exhale smoothly, or begins to restrict their breath, it may indicate that their alignment is compromised and it is time to exit the pose.

To minimize or prevent shaking, the following strategies are recommended:

  • Take short breaks between poses to allow muscles to recover.
  • Gradually increase the intensity of the practice over time.
  • Focus on proper alignment and consider attending beginner classes to learn correct form.
  • Ensure adequate hydration before and after practice.

For those engaging in strenuous practice lasting longer than 60 minutes, adding electrolytes may be beneficial. One recommendation is to sip approximately 20 ounces of an electrolyte-containing beverage two to three hours before the practice begins.

The Role of Neurological Responses

The shaking experienced in yoga is not solely a matter of muscle strength but also involves the neurological system. The interaction between the brain and the muscles during high-effort poses can create a quivering effect as the body attempts to maintain stability.

By listening to the body and making necessary adjustments, practitioners can navigate these sensations safely, ensuring that the physical challenge of the pose does not lead to an increased risk of injury due to degraded alignment.
