Wicked Director Shares Challenges Faced During Filming: Behind the Scenes Insights
‘Wicked‘ Director Tackles Challenges in Film Adaptation
The song Defying Gravity is crucial in the film adaptation of Wicked, as it concludes the movie, paving the way for the sequel next year. Director Jon M. Chu discussed the challenges of bringing this iconic song from stage to screen in an interview with GamesRadar+.
Jon explained, “The alternative was not possible… We tried to make it into one movie, and you had to rip out songs, and it became not Wicked. They had tried for 20 years to do that.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining the character arcs while addressing the audience’s expectations in a film format.
“The audience is more skeptical in a movie,” he said. This skepticism required solid emotional turns for the characters. Consequently, some adjustments were necessary. For example, Jon shared that they needed to modify the context in which Defying Gravity is presented. “If you just use the song itself the way it’s used in the show, it doesn’t feel like the end of this epic journey,” he noted.
To convey Elphaba’s personal growth, Jon stated, “I’m rooting for Elphaba to have this for herself, and she can’t just get it. She has to earn it.” The adaptation process involved careful consideration of how to express Elphaba’s internal struggles without altering the original lyrics.
In summary, Wicked‘s film adaptation required significant creative efforts to satisfy both the story’s integrity and cinematic expectations, making for an engaging and dynamic approach to a beloved musical.
