Background⁢ on the “Wicked” Franchise

“Wicked” originated ⁤as ⁤a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, reimagining the story of the Wizard of⁢ Oz from the viewpoint of the Wicked Witch of the West. The musical ⁣adaptation, with music and lyrics ⁤by Stephen Schwartz, premiered on Broadway in 2003 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, winning numerous awards and consistently ranking among the highest-grossing Broadway shows.

The decision to⁢ split the story into two films allows for a more⁢ faithful adaptation ⁢of the complex narrative and character development present in both the novel and the musical. This approach mirrors the strategy used for adaptations of lengthy book series like “The hunger Games” and “Harry Potter.”
