Wicked Movie: Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

The new movie adaptation of “Wicked,” featuring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, includes a standout sequence where the witches visit the Emerald City. During the song “One Short Day,” they purchase tickets to a musical called “Wizomania,” which promotes the Wizard (played by Jeff Goldblum).

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth appear as the wise women of Oz in “Wizomania.” Initially, the creators considered casting them as Elphaba and Glinda’s mothers. However, director Jon Chu suggested the idea of linking their roles to the story of the Grimmerie, a magical book that Elphaba can read.

Menzel and Chenoweth enrich the song, incorporating elements from their famous performances. Schneider describes the sequence as filled with “Easter eggs,” referencing their iconic moments from the original Broadway show.

Additional Cameos in Wicked

In addition to Menzel and Chenoweth, “Wicked” fans may spot other former cast members, such as Kerry Ellis and Dianne Pilkington. Stephen Schwartz, the musical’s composer, makes a cameo as an Emerald City guard, while screenwriter Winnie Holzman appears in a crowd scene.

Bringing Menzel and Chenoweth together on set proved emotional, as both are preparing for new Broadway productions. Schwartz expressed this emotional moment, highlighting the history between the performers and their mentorship of the new generation.

This blend of nostalgia and celebration makes “Wicked” a must-see for both new audiences and long-time fans.
