Championship contenders Lead the Irish Squad
Ireland’s team for the European Aquatics Championships (25m), taking place in Lublin, Poland from December 2-7, is headlined by Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen and Olympic finalist ellen Walshe. Both athletes enjoyed success at the 2023 Championships, with Wiffen securing gold medals in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events - also setting a world record in the 800m freestyle – and walshe claiming bronze in the 400m individual medley.
Wiffen has been recovering from surgery as September and recently began training in California. Walshe has been actively competing on the World Aquatics World Cup tour, achieving a gold, two silver, and a bronze medal, alongside setting two new Irish records.
rising Stars and Debutants Join the Ranks
The Irish team also includes World Aquatics Championships finalist Ellie McCartney, and semi-finalists Evan Bailey, John Shortt, and Tom Fannon. A wave of new talent will also be showcased, with Adam Bradley (Mount Kelly), Matthew Hamilton (Plymouth), and Denis O’Brien (national Center Limerick) set to make their senior international debuts after representing Ireland at the European Junior Championships this past summer.
Rosalie Phelan of National Centre Ulster will also earn her first full Ireland cap at the event in Lublin.
Future World Championship hopefuls Included
Completing the 13-strong team are Jack Cassin, Eoin Corby, and Cormac rynn, all from National Centre Limerick, who are already identified as potential team members for the 2025 World Championships.
