England all-rounder Will Jacks has revealed that his recent emergency appendectomy severely impacted his core strength and left his off-spin bowling confidence as a work in progress during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The 27-year-old was hospitalized immediately upon flying to Edinburgh for a family birthday and underwent surgery the following day, leaving him with just four weeks to recover and regain his fitness before the late-summer internationals.
Emergency Surgery and Recovery Challenges
The sudden health scare caught the cricketer entirely by surprise. Will Jacks described the ordeal as completely random and quite scary, noting that he was fortunate to be treated by the National Health Service. The surgical procedure left him with three small scars on his lower abdomen after doctors performed a slight incision rather than a full opening. Recovering from the operation required a slow, staged rehabilitation process. Jacks admitted he felt a little under-cooked when he returned to action for the Lions earlier this month. The physical toll of the operation meant losing substantial core strength, which made returning to international-level off-spin a major mental and physical hurdle.

Staged Return to Bowling and All-Round Value
Because of the physical limitations imposed by the appendectomy, Jacks had to prioritize his rehabilitation milestones. He only managed to bowl for five days prior to the opening Twenty20 international as he worked to rebuild his strength and fitness. Batting proved much easier to resume initially, leaving bowling as the final phase of his comeback. Despite the interrupted preparation, Jacks proved his value during the opening One-Day International at the Banks Homes Riverside on September 23, 2026. He scored an unbeaten 46 runs before claiming five wickets for 22 runs, delivering the second-best bowling figures by an England spinner in an ODI and steering the hosts to an 89-run victory.
Role Under Harry Brook and Future Fixtures
Under the captaincy of Harry Brook, Jacks has transitioned down the batting order into a more defined all-round role. The team’s trust in his abilities was underscored when he was appointed vice-captain for the white-ball visit of Sri Lanka.
