Will Johnson and surviving members of Magnolia Electric Co.have announced the formation of Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co. The group, which collaborated extensively with the late Jason Molina, will release a 7″ record and embark on a Texas tour in September. They have also shared their rendition of “The Big Beast,” originally by Molina and Magnolia Electric Co.
The band features Will johnson, Mike Brenner, Jason Evans Groth, Michael Kapinus, Mark Rice, and Pete Schreiner. earlier this year, they convened in Texas to record new versions of songs by both Molina and Johnson. These recordings will be released on September 19 as a two-song 7″ featuring “Wooden Heart” and “Twenty Cycles to the Ground,” both from their 2009 collaborative album, Molina and Johnson. Britton Beisenherz recorded and mixed the sessions, while Matthew Barnhart handled mastering. Will Schaff, a longtime collaborator of Jason Molina, created the cover artwork.
Johnson, a Texas songwriter known for his work with Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, and the 400 Unit with jason Isbell, released Molina and Johnson with Jason Molina in 2009. A tour planned to support the album was canceled due to Molina’s struggles with alcohol.
Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co. will perform in the same Texas cities that Molina and Magnolia Electric Co. frequented during their seven years of touring.
