President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term in Brazil’s general election, with the first round of voting scheduled for October 4, 2026. The 80-year-old incumbent, leading the leftist Workers’ Party (PT), has maintained his intention to run for the presidency, a move that has set the stage for a contest against a fragmented right-wing opposition.

Recent opinion polling indicates that President Lula currently leads the field of potential candidates. According to a Datafolha survey conducted between April 7 and April 9, 2026, Lula holds 39% of voting intention, followed by Flávio Bolsonaro at 35%. Other candidates in the same poll include Ronaldo Caiado at 5%, Romeu Zema at 4%, and Renan Santos at 2%.

A separate poll by Ideia, conducted from April 3 to April 7, 2026, shows similar trends, placing Lula at 40.4% and Flávio Bolsonaro at 37%. In this survey, Ronaldo Caiado polled at 6.5%, while Romeu Zema and Renan Santos both recorded 3%.

The Right-Wing Challenge

The primary challenger to the incumbent is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL). Flávio Bolsonaro is running after his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, became ineligible to seek office following an indictment and imprisonment in September for plotting a coup. Jair Bolsonaro has endorsed his son to carry the flag of the far-right movement.

Beyond the Bolsonaro candidacy, several other right-wing and center-right figures are competing for the electorate. On March 30, 2026, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) selected Governor Ronaldo Caiado of Goiás as its presidential candidate. The PSD, led by Gilberto Kassab, has expressed intentions to mobilize the party behind a single candidate, though Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul has also been identified as a prospective candidate within the party.

Other active candidates include Romeu Zema, the Governor of Minas Gerais representing the NOVO party, and Renan Santos of the Mission party. The Avante party announced the candidacy of writer Augusto Cury on April 5, 2026.

Campaign Strategy and Ticket

President Lula has confirmed that he will keep Geraldo Alckmin as his running mate for the October election. This partnership continues the coalition established in the previous election cycle.

Campaign Strategy and Ticket

Lula’s decision to run for an unprecedented fourth term follows signals he gave to party members in May 2025. During those discussions, he expressed confidence in his candidacy, stating The only person who can beat me is me.

Polling Trends

Voting intentions have remained competitive throughout the pre-campaign period. A Nexus poll conducted between March 27 and March 29, 2026, showed Lula with 41% and Flávio Bolsonaro with 38%. In that survey, Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema both polled at 4%, while Eduardo Leite recorded 2%.

The current political landscape suggests a closely contested race between the incumbent leftist president and the Liberal Party’s candidate, while center-right governors and independent political movements attempt to secure a significant share of the first-round vote.
