Will Packer, the prominent film producer known for hits like Straight Outta Compton and Girls Trip, shared insights into the foundation of his enduring marriage during a recent public appearance, emphasizing communication, mutual respect, and shared values as key to sustaining a strong partnership over more than a decade.
Speaking at the New York premiere of the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, which he produced and stars Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, Packer spoke candidly with PEOPLE magazine about the principles that have guided his relationship with his wife, Heather Hayslett, whom he married in 2015 after meeting her at the ESSENCE Festival in 2009.
“Listen, my wife and I, we talk so much in the midst of everything that is happening in the world,” Packer said. “If you can stay centered and grounded and realize we’re all part of the human race, all part of humanity, and unlock love and unlock that feeling of we’re all one.”
He described their ongoing dialogue as a grounding force amid the pressures of public life and demanding careers, noting that staying emotionally connected helps them navigate challenges together. For Packer, maintaining this emotional equilibrium is not just personal but reflective of a broader human need for connection and empathy.
The producer also highlighted the importance of shared experiences, particularly the simple act of going to the movies together. “It’s one of the reasons I want people to go to this theater, to see it on the big screen,” he said. “To sit there with strangers in a dark theater and have an enjoyable communal experience. That’s the best version of movie-making in my opinion.”
For Packer and Hayslett, attending the premiere of You, Me & Tuscany was more than a professional obligation — it was their designated date night. “You’ve got to keep it special,” he said. “This is our date night. It really is. We’re going to have a good time.”
When asked about the core of their lasting bond, Packer pointed to honesty, trust, and communication as non-negotiables. “Having somebody that you know has your back, that level of trust is hard to find, and that has propelled me in my career,” he explained, suggesting that the stability of his personal life has directly contributed to his professional resilience and focus.
Reflecting on their history, Packer recalled how their friendship deepened over time, noting that even when apart, he misses not only her presence as a partner but also as a confidant. “When she’s not around, I miss her because we have a passionate love, but also, I miss my friend,” he told ESSENCE magazine in a 2017 interview, underscoring the dual nature of their relationship as both romantic and deeply platonic.
He further elaborated on the balance between social engagement and personal solitude, explaining that while he enjoys being outgoing, his most meaningful moments of peace are those shared with Hayslett. “I’m social, but at the same time, I like moments where it’s just me. But my ‘just me’ moments always include Heather. That’s the best ‘just me’ moment, when it’s just me and her,” he said.
The couple’s journey began in 2009 at the ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans, where they met during a boat ride. After several years of dating, they became engaged in 2013 and tied the knot in a ceremony in Atlanta in 2015. Over the years, they have maintained a relatively private personal life despite Packer’s high-profile career in Hollywood.
Packer’s reflections come amid continued success in the entertainment industry, where he has become one of the most influential African-American producers, known for championing diverse stories and supporting emerging talent. His recent projects continue to reflect a commitment to authentic storytelling, often centered on relationships, identity, and community — themes that mirror the values he emphasizes in his own life.
As he continues to balance a demanding career with a grounded personal life, Packer’s public remarks serve as a reminder of the enduring power of intentionality in relationships — where consistent communication, mutual respect, and shared experiences form the bedrock of lasting love.
