Willie McGinley to Stand Trial for Violent Assault

Willie McGinley, a 22-year-old man from Cooleeny, Longford, faces serious charges after a violent incident resulted in a teenager needing hospitalization. McGinley is accused of assault causing harm, producing a knife, and committing violent disorder.

The alleged incident took place at Hanlon’s Gala Shop on Dublin Road, Longford, on June 11, 2024. The victim, in his late teens, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

At his initial court appearance in June, McGinley received bail with strict conditions, including residing in Mullingar. He later requested a change of address due to difficulties with his interim accommodation, which the court granted.

During a recent court session on November 20, Garda Allan Doherty testified that two additional charges—production of a knife and violent disorder—were brought against McGinley. When these charges were read, McGinley did not respond. He received a true copy of the charge sheets.

All three charges will proceed to the circuit criminal court. Judge Bernadette Owens extended McGinley’s bail as there were no objections from the prosecution. A disclosure order for all evidence was issued to McGinley’s lawyer, Bríd Mimnagh, who also requested permission for McGinley to meet with Department of Social Protection officials regarding his social welfare, which had been suspended. This request was approved, provided that the Gardaí receive at least 48 hours’ notice before any meeting.

McGinley is scheduled to return to Longford District Court on December 17.
