Weslyn Caldwell has been appointed the new executive director of Willkie House, a Des Moines nonprofit focused on after-school programming for families and youth. Caldwell succeeds Alex Rice, who now leads the Iowa Nonprofit Alliance.
Caldwell brings more than 15 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement to the role. Willkie House, established in 1917, has a long history of serving Des Moines’ Black community. Today, about 90% of the youth served are students of color.
The organization aims to expand its student programs and community engagement under Caldwell’s leadership, seeking solutions to meet the community’s evolving needs.
“I am honored to join Willkie house and contribute to its longstanding tradition of building community,” Caldwell said. “I look forward to working with the dedicated staff, volunteers and partners to deepen our impact in Des Moines. Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for our families and youth.”
