EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Despite not being a formal requirement, veteran quarterback Russell wilson intends to mentor rookie Jaxson Dart on the New York Giants. Wilson, a Super Bowl winner, signed a one-year contract to start for the Giants this season.
The Giants traded to draft Dart as a future prospect. The plan is for Dart to learn from Wilson and Jameis Winston, with Tommy DeVito also in the quarterback room.
“I’ve always viewed it as you’re always trying to be the best version of you, and then you’re always giving back to everybody else,” Wilson said, emphasizing his inclusive approach to the entire team.
Since joining the Giants in March, Wilson has quickly become a respected leader. He recently organized a dinner with quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and running backs, and held offseason throwing sessions.
“We haven’t had a quarterback that’s going to command everything, and you know exactly what you want,” said wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, praising Wilson’s leadership.
Wilson maintains that drafting Dart hasn’t changed his approach. He remains focused on leading the team and improving daily. At a recent organized team activity, Wilson made an notable throw to Darius Slayton for a 40-yard touchdown.
“I just think about having success today. It’s always been my approach,” Wilson said. “Every day is like I’m trying to be the best in the world.”
Coach Brian Daboll said the Giants aren’t specifically asking Wilson to be a mentor, but appreciate the leadership he brings to the team. He believes the veteran’s experience will benefit the younger players.
“It’s a natural thing just going about your buisness rather than, ‘Hey, I need to be the mentor to this guy,'” coach Brian Daboll said. “The guys that have played and have experience, they always give good input to the younger guys.”
What’s next
Wilson and Dart will continue to develop in the Giants’ new offensive system, with Wilson leading the way and Dart learning from his experience.
