Windows Hello Update: Visible Light Now Required for Facial Recognition

Microsoft’s recent update to Windows Hello now mandates the use of visible light for facial recognition, according to a Microsoft announcement reported by Windows Central. The change,implemented in an April patch,technically means Windows Hello now uses both a webcam and an infrared depth camera for logins.
The update addresses a spoofing vulnerability, Windows central said.
Despite the change, initial tests suggest the update may have little practical effect for most users. Tests on a Surface Laptop 7th Edition, an Asus ZenBook S 14, and an MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo, all updated with the April patch KB5055523, showed successful facial logins in near-dark conditions. The laptop screens provided sufficient illumination for the cameras to recognize the user’s face.
Even with Windows’ anti-spoofing technology enabled, logins proceeded without issue. The anti-spoofing feature is designed to enhance security against impersonation.

However, some users, including a colleague and Windows Central staff, have reported that their laptop cameras struggled to recognize them after the update.
As a backup, Microsoft requires a numeric PIN for login.
