Microsoft is rolling out its controversial Windows Recall feature, but with a significant limitation: the export function is onyl available to users within the European Economic area (EEA). The AI-powered system, which captures screenshots and stores them in an encrypted database, has raised privacy concerns.

The export function allows users to share their Recall data with third-party applications. However, Microsoft has implemented safeguards. A unique encryption key is generated when Recall is enabled. Losing this key requires a restart of Recall,wiping the existing database.
In addition to the export function, Microsoft has also changed the data retention policy for Recall. Previously, data was stored indefinitely. Now, the default retention period is 90 days.
Microsoft said the changes are a result of its commitment to complying with applicable laws and regulations. The company did not specify which laws prompted the change, but the move aligns with stricter data privacy standards in the EEA.
