U.S. Households faced an increase in home heating costs during the 2025–26 winter season, driven largely by a surge in natural gas and electricity prices that outpaced the general rate of inflation.

According to a study from the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA), the average American energy bill for the cold weather season was predicted to rise by 7.6% to an average of $976. The organization noted that electric and natural gas prices were primary drivers of this sharp increase in winter heating bills.

Impact by Heating Fuel

The financial impact varied significantly depending on the primary fuel source used for heating. Those relying on electricity were projected to see a 10.2% increase in their bills, while households using natural gas faced an expected jump of 8.4%.

Impact by Heating Fuel

Natural gas prices rose 13.8% from the previous year. This increase significantly exceeded the annual inflation rate of 2.9% recorded in August.

In contrast, a small segment of the population experienced lower costs. Users of propane and heating oil, who represent approximately 10% of U.S. Households, saw their energy bills decrease by 5% and 4% respectively.

Expenditure Trends and Forecasts

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provided a detailed breakdown of average monthly household expenditures for the 2025–26 winter period. Based on the October 15, 2025, Winter Fuels Outlook, total seasonal expenditures were estimated as follows:

  • Electricity: $1,133 (a 4% increase from the previous winter)
  • Propane: $1,210 (a 9% decrease from the previous winter)
  • Heating Oil: $1,390 (an 8% decrease from the previous winter)
  • Natural Gas: $642 (a 1% decrease from the previous winter)

Updated EIA forecasts published on April 7, 2026, reflected slight adjustments to these totals. The revised total for natural gas expenditures rose to $654, representing a 1% increase over the previous winter, while heating oil totals were adjusted to $1,429, a 6% decrease.

The EIA also indicated that electricity costs may continue to escalate, with potential increases of up to 18% over the next few years according to a May report.

Broader Economic Strain

The rise in winter heating costs followed a period of high expenses during the summer of 2025. The average summer household electricity bill reached an estimated $776, which was the highest level in at least 12 years.

This compounding financial pressure has led to an increase in energy arrearages, which are unpaid energy bills owed to utility companies. NEADA reported that these arrearages rose from approximately $17.5 billion on December 31, 2023, to $23.0 billion by June 30, 2025, marking a rise of about 31%.

Mark Wolfe, the executive director of NEADA, stated that there had been a period of relatively stable electric bills before electricity costs increased at twice the rate of inflation last year.

Additional projections from December 17, 2025, suggested that overall home heating costs were expected to jump by 9.2% due to the combined factors of increasing energy prices and colder temperatures.
