Winter Road Maintenance Preparedness in West Kelowna: Essential Updates and Tips
Winter Weather Preparedness in West Kelowna
Date: Friday, Nov. 15, 2024
As winter weather approaches, City of West Kelowna crews and their roads contractor, AEL, are ready to respond if snow begins to fall.
Crews have already applied brine on key routes. Once the snow falls, they will follow this maintenance priority:
Winter Roads Maintenance Priority Sequence:
- Priority 1: Arterial roads including Boucherie, Glenrosa, Shannon Lake, and Westlake Roads. These roads must remain clear for emergency services and BC Transit.
- Priority 2: Collector roads such as Auburn, Elliott, Gellatly, Ross, and Thacker Roads. This also includes school bus routes, urban centers, and school zones, weather permitting.
- Priority 3: Neighborhood streets, no-thru roads, cul-de-sacs, and crescents will be cleared within 48 hours after the snow stops.
For more details about winter roads maintenance, view our priority map here.
How You Can Help:
- Park Off-Street: Avoid street parking for up to 48 hours after the snow stops. This allows plows to work better.
- Clear Sidewalks: Remove snow and ice from sidewalks next to your property.
- Keep Streets Clear: Do not shovel snow from your property onto the road.
- Maintain Access: Keep fire hydrants and storm drains clear.
If your street has not been serviced within 48 hours after the snow stops, please submit an online service request during business hours (Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). After hours, call AEL at 1-866-353-3136.
Winter Driving Tips:
- Drive slower.
- Keep a safe distance between vehicles.
- Turn on your headlights at all times.
