The organizers of the Wireless Festival are defending the decision to book Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, as the headliner for all three nights of the event in London’s Finsbury Park this July. The booking has sparked significant backlash from government officials, community leaders, and corporate sponsors due to the artist’s history of anti-Semitic remarks.

The scheduled performances are described as a three-night journey through the artist’s most iconic records. However, the announcement has led to a series of high-profile withdrawals from festival sponsors, including Pepsi, PayPal, Rockstar Energy, and drinks giant Diageo.

Promoter Defends Booking on Grounds of Forgiveness

Melvin Benn, the managing director of Festival Republic—which co-promotes Wireless alongside Live Nation—issued a statement addressing the controversy. While Benn described Ye’s past comments regarding Jews and Hitler as abhorrent, he urged the public to offer some forgiveness and hope.

I am a deeply committed anti-fascist and have been all my adult life. I lived on a kibbutz for many months in the 1970s that was attacked on October 7th, am pro Jew and the Jewish state, while being equally committed to a Palestinian state.

Melvin Benn

Benn cited his personal experiences with mental illness over the last 15 years as a reason for his stance, stating that he has witnessed despicable behaviour that he had to forgive and move on from in his own life and work.

The promoter further argued that Ye possesses a legal right to come into the country and to perform in this country, noting that the artist’s music continues to be played on commercial radio and is available via streaming platforms across the UK without widespread public outcry.

Benn clarified that the festival is not providing a platform for the artist to extol opinion of whatever nature, but is solely booking him to perform songs that are listened to and enjoyed by millions.

Political and Community Opposition

The decision has been condemned by several high-ranking UK officials. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the booking as deeply concerning, specifically citing Ye’s previous anti-Semitic remarks and celebration of Nazism.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also spoken out against the decision. The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism and the Jewish Leadership Council have condemned the festival for selecting Ye as a headliner.

On April 6, 2026, Sajid Javid, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and current chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, condemned the booking. Javid expressed certainty that the Home Secretary would block the rapper from entering the UK if the Wireless Festival did not cancel the shows.

Following this outcry, it has emerged that Ye’s right to enter the UK is currently under government review.

Context of Past Controversies

The controversy stems from a pattern of offensive comments beginning in 2022, which resulted in the suspension of Ye’s Instagram and Twitter accounts. During that period, he was dropped by his record label, his talent agency, his lawyer, and fashion partners including Adidas and Balenciaga.

While the artist issued an apology to the Jewish community in 2023 and later attributed some of his behavior to alcohol in 2024, further controversies emerged in early 2025. During that time, he retracted his previous apology and declared himself a Nazi on X/Twitter, though he later claimed that after further reflection he realized he was not a Nazi.

Legal challenges have also followed these events. Former employees have filed lawsuits alleging that Ye used anti-Semitic language in the workplace, praised Hitler, and claimed that Jewish people were working together to hold him back.

More recently, Ye has attempted to make amends by meeting with a rabbi and publishing a full-page apology advertisement in the Wall Street Journal, where he stated he had lost touch with reality.
