Prosecutors allege that VanDuyne broke into a woman’s car in a Middleton Costco parking lot last month, contaminating her water bottle with cyanide. The woman noticed people outside her car indicating it had been tampered with. While she initially found nothing amiss, she later noticed the water tasted unusual. two weeks later, a similar incident occurred, prompting the woman to bring the water bottle to police, who confirmed the presence of cyanide.
Around the same time, another woman in Rock County was hospitalized after drinking cyanide-tainted water she found in her car following a visit to the gym. Both women had previously dated VanDuyne, according to prosecutors.
VanDuyne was arrested after authorities monitored him attempting to conceal evidence. Police intervened when he tried contacting the Rock County woman. While in jail, VanDuyne allegedly contacted Whitaker, instructing her to remove items from his residence.
