Wise Eyes new York Listing to Boost Valuation, Investor appeal
Wise, the UK fintech company, is planning to move its primary listing to New York in an effort to draw in more investors and increase its valuation. This decision delivers a blow to the London market, which has struggled to compete with Wall Street.
The company, launched in London in 2010 by Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus, announced Thursday that the move to new York would help accelerate its mission and bring substantial strategic and capital market benefits to Wise and its owners. About a fifth of Wise’s staff is based in the United Kingdom.
Wise began by offering money transfers that undercut banks. It has since expanded to include investment products and debit cards. The company intends to retain a listing in London.
The decision requires a shareholder vote. The company said, “We believe the addition of a primary US listing would help us accelerate our mission and bring substantial strategic and capital market benefits to Wise and our owners.”
The proposed shift for Wise is highly likely to fuel anxieties over the appeal of the London market. In December, construction equipment rental group Ashtead announced similar plans, citing the U.S. as its largest market.
What’s next
Shareholders will vote on the proposal to shift Wise’s primary listing to New York. The company will continue to operate and maintain a listing in London, regardless of the outcome.
