WIU Leathernecks Face Monmouth College After Tough Loss to Northern Iowa
Western Illinois Falls to Northern Iowa
Macomb, Ill. – Western Illinois University lost to Northern Iowa with a score of 82-56 on Tuesday night. This defeat brought the Leathernecks’ record to 2-3 for the season.
Game Highlights:
- Marko Maletic and Trey Deveaux led the team with 15 points each. Maletic hit two three-pointers, while Deveaux scored 13 of his points in the second half.
- Kayden Carter added 8 points to the scoreboard. Rodrick Payne and Ryan Myers contributed 6 points each.
Turnover Issues:
The Leathernecks committed 12 turnovers, allowing Northern Iowa to score 17 points from those mistakes. Western Illinois scored 28 points in the paint and got 36 points from their bench, with 30 of those from Maletic and Deveaux.
Defensive Struggles:
The Leathernecks struggled defensively as Northern Iowa outscored them in the paint and in fast breaks. Northern Iowa scored 50 points in the paint compared to just 28 for WIU. They also scored 21 points on fast breaks, while Western Illinois managed only 2.
Second Half Performance:
In the second half, the bench scored 31 of WIU’s 32 points. Tay Knox made a free throw early in the half, and the team shot 6-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line, with all attempts occurring after halftime.
