Wolfsberger AC has parted ways with head coach Ismail Atalan. The decision was reported on April 6, 2026, by Ligaportal and sport.ORF.at, marking another leadership change for the Carinthian club during the current campaign.
The coaching change follows a match in the 25th round of the Austrian Bundesliga against WSG Tirol. According to DiePresse.com, the result of the fixture provided WSG Tirol with essential breathing room in their struggle to avoid relegation, while leaving Wolfsberger AC in a precarious position.
A Period of Managerial Instability
Ismail Atalan’s departure is the latest in a series of rapid managerial transitions at the club. Atalan had been brought in to replace Peter Pacult, whose own tenure was exceptionally short.
Peter Pacult served as head coach for approximately one month, managing only five matches in total. During his brief time at the helm, Pacult secured only one victory in four league games. His exit followed discussions between club president Dietmar Riegler and Pacult, leading both parties to mutually agree to end their cooperation.
Pacult, who previously coached at Dynamo Dresden and 1860 Munich, had been appointed to succeed Dietmar Kühbauer, who departed the club to join SK Rapid Wien.
Ismail Atalan’s Background and Appointment
Atalan, a German coach of Kurdish origin and a trained financial specialist, was appointed to lead the Wolfsberger AC squad after a successful period in the Austrian second division. He previously coached Kapfenberger SV, where he led the team to a third-place finish in the 2. Liga.

This performance earned Atalan the distinction of being named the 2. Liga coach of the year. Despite this success, Atalan had left Kapfenberger SV at the end of that season due to differences regarding sporting objectives.
Prior to his time in Austria, Atalan gained significant attention in Germany with Sportfreunde Lotte. Under his guidance, the club achieved its first-ever promotion to the third German league and reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal.
Upon his appointment at Wolfsberger AC, Atalan stated that his discussions with president Dietmar Riegler had been very constructive
and provided a very good feeling
on a personal level.
League Context and Standings
The 2025-26 Austrian Football Bundesliga, known as the Admiral Bundesliga for sponsorship reasons, began on August 1, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on May 24, 2026. The competition is currently in the Bundesliga-Qualifikationsgruppe phase.
This season is notable as the final year the league will employ the halving of points after the regular season, a system that was first introduced for the 2018-19 season.
The current struggle for stability at Wolfsberger AC comes amidst a competitive season where Sturm Graz entered as a two-time defending champion. The club’s inability to maintain consistent form in the league has led to the current vacancy in the head coaching position.
Wolfsberger AC has not yet announced a permanent successor to Atalan. The club remains focused on improving its standing within the Qualifikationsgruppe as the season approaches its conclusion in May.
