Wolverhampton Wanderers have been officially relegated from the Premier League following West Ham United’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday, April 20, 2026. The result confirmed Wolves’ drop to the Championship after an eight-season stay in England’s top flight.
The draw left West Ham on 33 points, while Wolves remained on 17 points from 33 games played. With only 15 points still available to play for, Wolves could not mathematically catch West Ham, who moved further clear of the relegation zone. Wolves are now 16 points from safety with five matches left, making survival impossible.
Wolves’ relegation ends their first top-flight spell since gaining promotion in 2018. During that period, they achieved two seventh-place finishes and reached the Europa League semi-finals in the 2019/20 season. However, the loss of key players to bigger clubs saw them gradually decline, finishing in the bottom half of the table in recent seasons.
The club struggled from the outset of the 2025/26 campaign, losing their first five matches and failing to win any of their first 19 league games. Although results improved after Rob Edwards replaced Vítor Pereira as head coach in November 2025, the team never looked capable of mounting a survival charge.
West Ham’s point at Selhurst Park also impacted other relegation battlers. Tottenham Hotspur, who had appeared close to escaping the drop zone under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Brighton & Hove Albion after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, secured a vital 4-1 victory over Burnley on Sunday to move five points clear of the bottom three.
Leeds United strengthened their position with back-to-back wins, defeating Manchester United 2-1 on Monday and then Wolves 3-0 on Saturday, giving them an eight-point cushion over the relegation zone.
Wolves will now return to the Championship for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Their relegation marks the first time they have dropped to the second tier since 2012, ending an era that began with their promotion a decade ago.
In a statement after the relegation was confirmed, Wolves interim executive Nathan Shi acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the club’s commitment to rebuilding. “Confirmation of our relegation is a difficult moment for everyone connected to Wolves,” Shi said. “While this is a deeply disappointing outcome, work has been under way since my arrival in December to ensure we are ready to respond with clarity and conviction.”
Shi added that the club knows what is required to improve and will approach the coming months with purpose. “We know this season has tested your loyalty and patience. Your backing, home and away, has not been taken for granted. You deserve better and giving you a club you can genuinely be proud of is what drives everything we do from this point forward.”
