Belfast, northern Ireland – A woman wearing a Palestine Action t-shirt was arrested at an anti-racism protest in Belfast city center, sparking condemnation from local politicians. The arrest comes after a controversial move by the British Government in July to criminalise expressing support for, or membership of, palestine Action under terrorism legislation.
The incident in Belfast follows the arrest of approximately 365 individuals in London over the weekend, who were demonstrating in Parliament Square in support of the now-banned group.
Arrest Details and Police Justification
Videos circulating online depict the woman being informed by Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers that she was being detained on suspicion of “possessing an article, namely a sign or t-shirt, that indicates support for Palestine Action.” This submission of terrorism legislation to peaceful protest has raised serious concerns about freedom of expression and the right to political dissent.
The PSNI has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
Political Condemnation and Calls for Charges to be Dropped
People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll strongly criticised the police action, arguing it highlights a disturbing double standard. “The whole world can see the mass starvation and daily executions carried out by Israel, yet the people being harassed in Belfast are those who stand up for Palestine,” he stated.
Carroll further pointed out the disparity in policing, noting that far-right protesters displaying offensive pro-Israel signage were not subjected to the same level of intervention. He also criticised the lack of local input into the decision to proscribe Palestine Action, stating, “The British Government implemented a regressive clampdown with their vote to proscribe Palestine Action, without a single vote being cast in the local Assembly.”
Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast,Pat Sheehan, echoed these sentiments, labelling the actions of the British Government and the PSNI as “disgraceful.” He connected the crackdown on pro-Palestine activism to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the policies of the Israeli government.
Broader Context: UK Government’s Stance and International Criticism
sheehan was highly critical of Labor leader Keir Starmer, accusing him of enabling the “ongoing Israeli genocide and starvation of Gazans” while simultaneously suppressing dissent within the UK. He highlighted the recent announcement by Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the planned seizure of Gaza City, arguing that Starmer’s support for Israel is prioritised over addressing the humanitarian crisis.
“Highlighting the ongoing devastation in Gaza is not a crime. the real crime is Israel’s policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide, aided and abetted by the US and Britain,” Sheehan asserted.
The proscription of Palestine Action has been met with widespread criticism from human rights groups and legal experts, who argue that it sets a hazardous precedent for suppressing legitimate protest and dissent. Critics contend that the use of terrorism legislation to target activists engaged in non-violent direct action is disproportionate and undermines fundamental democratic principles. The move by the UK government aligns with a broader trend of increasing restrictions on pro-Palestine activism in several Western countries, raising concerns about the suppression of free speech and the right to advocate for Palestinian rights. The arrests in belfast and London represent the latest escalation in this ongoing struggle.
