Woman Dead, Two Critically Injured in Schley Street Fire in Newark, New Jersey

The fire occurred at approximately 3 a.m. At a multi-family home located at 282 Schley Street in the city’s South Ward, according to the Newark Fire Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Neighbors reported that people were trapped inside the burning structure and had to climb out of windows to escape the rapidly spreading flames. Video footage from the scene showed flames engulfing the second floor and roof of the home.
The Newark Fire Department responded to the emergency call and worked to extinguish the blaze, but the home was destroyed in the fire. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
