Truck Plunge into San Diego Bay Claims Maryland Woman’s Life
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A Maryland woman has been identified as the person who died after a truck plunged into San Diego Bay last week, authorities said.
Victim Identified as Anne Confer
Anne Confer, 53, of Maryland, was one of three occupants in a GMC truck that drove off South Harbor Island Drive and into the bay on April 10 for reasons still under investigation, according to port police.
Witness Accounts and Rescue Efforts
Witnesses reported the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed before it crossed two intersections and entered the water, authorities said.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Matt Moe stated that bystanders pulled one person from the submerged vehicle before first responders arrived. “We found a vehicle that was entirely immersed in the bay, with a person at that time, that some passersby had taken to the shore,” Moe said. That individual was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital, he added.
Divers from the Port Police Department and San Diego lifeguards rescued two other occupants who were trapped inside the truck. they were also taken to area hospitals.
Investigation Ongoing
One of the truck’s occupants was later pronounced dead, according to the San Diego County Medical examiner’s Office. The identity of the third occupant and their medical condition remain unknown.
The Port Police Traffic unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
