A woman in Istanbul underwent a surgical procedure to remove a 22-kilogram tumor from her abdomen after she had previously mistaken the symptoms of the growth for chronic constipation.

The patient, identified as Şükran Samanlı, experienced symptoms that led her to believe she was suffering from digestive issues. This misinterpretation of her physical condition delayed the discovery of the mass, which reports describe as having progressed insidiously.

Following the successful removal of the tumor, Samanlı experienced a significant change in her physical weight. According to reporting from Türkiye Gazetesi, her weight dropped from 79 kilograms to 57 kilograms in a single surgery, reflecting the 22-kilogram mass that had been residing in her abdominal cavity.

The case highlights the potential for large abdominal tumors to mimic common gastrointestinal problems. By compressing the intestines and other internal organs, such growths can cause symptoms that closely resemble constipation, often leading patients to seek treatment for digestive distress rather than investigating the cause of abdominal swelling or pressure.

The details of the procedure and the scale of the tumor were highlighted by Ensonhaber and Mersin Haber, which noted that the patient had attributed her discomfort to constipation before the medical reality of the tumor was uncovered.
