An Anchorage police officer shot and killed a woman on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, following a crisis negotiation standoff at a downtown apartment building, according to the Anchorage Police Department. The incident occurred in the 200 block of East Ninth Avenue at the Adelaide Single Room Occupancy apartments.

Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case stated that dispatchers received a 911 call from facility staff at 1:34 p.m. reporting that a woman was threatening suicide while armed with a gun. The caller informed police that the woman had also pointed the weapon at staff members inside the building. Officers arrived at the scene at 1:40 p.m., initiating a roughly one-hour standoff that brought crisis negotiators and SWAT team members to the downtown block located between the Delaney Park Strip, Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, and Denali Montessori School.

School Lockdown and Police Response

During the response, Denali Montessori School was operating as a polling location for the primary elections held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. Authorities placed the voting location on lockdown for approximately 40 minutes after the shooting took place. Chief Case said that officers observed the woman through a building window pointing a firearm in the direction of both police personnel and the nearby school.

At some point during the standoff, an officer fired a single round, striking the woman in the upper body and causing fatal injuries, according to police. Law enforcement officers subsequently entered the Adelaide apartments and pronounced her dead at the scene. Case noted that the entire response was captured on police dash cameras and body-worn video equipment.

Investigation and City Context

Investigators cordoned off East Ninth Avenue with police tape, where a rifle mounted on a tripod remained positioned near a crime scene vehicle. Chief Case addressed reporters regarding the outcome, stating that authorities maintained as much control of the scene as possible during an operation that law enforcement units frequently manage without lethal force.

“Sometimes you just can’t control everything,” Case said, according to Alaska’s News Source.

Tuesday’s fatal incident marks the 19th police-involved shooting in Anchorage for the year 2026, following another officer-involved shooting that occurred the previous week in a parking lot located in northeast Anchorage. The Anchorage Police Department documented the ongoing investigation under case number 26-21817.
