A case reported from Hong Kong has drawn international attention after a woman experienced significant memory loss following severe straining during constipation, according to multiple news sources.
The anonymous woman reportedly forgot more than 10 years of her life for approximately eight hours after struggling excessively on the toilet, as stated by The China Post and covered by outlets including the Daily Mirror and Mirror.co.uk.
Her memory returned after an overnight hospital stay, although she could not recall the events that occurred during and immediately after the episode, according to the same reports.
Neurologist Dr Peng Jiaxiong, who spoke with reporters, diagnosed the woman with transient global amnesia (TGA), a rare neurological condition characterized by sudden, temporary episodes of memory loss that cannot be attributed to more common causes such as stroke or epilepsy.
Dr Sarah Jarvis, commenting to The Sun, explained that in theory, extreme physical straining—such as that experienced during severe constipation—could potentially reduce blood flow to the brain.
