Woman Lost 10kg on Fat-Free Diet – But Her Health Collapsed

The Risks of Extreme Dieting: Why Cutting Out All Fat Can Be Dangerous

The pursuit of weight loss doesn’t necessitate the complete elimination of fats from the diet. In fact, doing so can be detrimental to health. Dr. Chiu Zheng-hong, a specialist in weight management, recently shared the case of a patient who attempted rapid weight loss by drastically restricting fat intake, ultimately experiencing significant health consequences despite initial success.

Dr. Chiu emphasizes that fat is an essential nutrient. When consumed in moderation, it isn’t merely tolerable but actively supports the proper functioning of various bodily systems. Completely removing fat from the diet can precipitate serious health crises.

“Eating Clean” to the Point of Menstrual Irregularity

Dr. Chiu Zheng-hong recounted, during an appearance on the Healthy Chat program, the story of a patient from Malaysia who was determined to lose weight. This individual meticulously avoided any visible fat in meat and, crucially, “washed” any food cooked with oil to remove it before consumption.

After six months of this rigorous regimen, the patient did achieve a weight loss of over 10 kilograms. However, she subsequently experienced amenorrhea – the cessation of menstruation – a significant warning sign of underlying health problems. This was directly linked to the prolonged and severe restriction of dietary fats, which disrupted her hormonal balance.

Four Vitamins at Risk with Fat Restriction

Prolonged avoidance of dietary fats not only reduces energy intake but also hinders the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins – vitamins A, D, E, and K. Deficiencies in these vitamins can lead to a range of health issues:

  • Vitamin A: Increases the risk of night blindness.
  • Vitamin E: Impacts cardiovascular health.
  • Vitamin D: Affects bone health, the immune system, and can contribute to sarcopenia (muscle loss).
  • Vitamin K: Plays a crucial role in blood coagulation.

fats and cholesterol are fundamental building blocks for many essential hormones. Insufficient cholesterol intake can lead to hormonal imbalances, menstrual irregularities, and decreased libido.

Choosing “Good” Fats Wisely

Dr. Chiu Zheng-hong advises that not all fats are created equal. It’s important to prioritize “good” fats and to cook with oils appropriate for the cooking temperature. He recommends the following:

  1. Olive Oil: Has a low smoke point and is best suited for low-temperature cooking.
  2. Camellia Oil: With a smoke point of approximately 220°C, it’s suitable for medium-heat cooking.
  3. Avocado Oil: Boasts a high smoke point of 270°C, making it ideal for high-heat frying.
  4. Linseed Oil: Has a very low smoke point and is best used for salad dressings or consumed raw.

The case highlights a critical point often overlooked in the pursuit of weight loss: the importance of a balanced diet. While reducing calorie intake is essential for weight management, eliminating entire macronutrient groups, like fats, can have serious and unintended consequences. The body requires a variety of nutrients to function optimally, and restricting essential components can disrupt hormonal balance, vitamin absorption, and overall health.

The patient’s experience serves as a cautionary tale. Rapid weight loss achieved through extreme dietary measures is often unsustainable and can lead to significant health problems. A more sustainable and healthy approach to weight management involves a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and, when necessary, guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.

It’s crucial to remember that fats are not the enemy. They play a vital role in numerous bodily functions, and choosing healthy fats as part of a balanced diet is essential for maintaining overall well-being. The focus should be on quality and moderation, rather than complete elimination.
