Woman Reveals Struggles with Gambling Addiction After Wedding Night Loss

Woman Reveals Struggles with Gambling Addiction After Wedding Night Loss

November 27, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Elissa Hubbard’s Story on Gambling Addiction

Elissa Hubbard is a 38-year-old woman who struggled with gambling addiction. She spent her wedding night in 2021 losing a significant portion of the money gifted to her and her wife. At her addiction’s peak, Elissa lost £40,000 a year.

According to BBC analysis, one in five betting shops are located in Wales‘ poorest areas. Dr. Jamie Torrance, a gambling psychology expert, described the clustering of betting shops in deprived locations as a major issue. He explained that those with low incomes often turn to gambling in hopes of improving their financial situation.

Elissa first gambled on slot machines at age nine, but her addiction worsened when she started gambling online. She would often risk her entire monthly salary on the chance of winning free spins. This led to a loss of self-esteem and identity, making her feel like a failure.

Gambling advertisements are everywhere, and Elissa feels they are impossible to ignore. She believes that advertising encourages people to gamble even when they are in dire financial situations. In her new home in Rhyl, Denbighshire, she noticed an overwhelming number of gambling venues nearby.

Recent BBC Wales research showed 71 betting premises in the 10% most deprived areas compared to only eight in more affluent areas. Elissa expressed her concern over the high concentration of gambling venues in poorer neighborhoods.

Dr. Torrance noted that financial strain and unemployment greatly increase the risk of developing gambling disorders. He pointed to how gambling company advertisements do not display the losses people suffer and mainly feature happy winners. He called for more NHS clinics in Wales dedicated to treating gambling addiction, as similar resources exist in England.

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) stated that most of its members implement self-exclusion schemes for those in need. They claim that 22.5 million people in Britain gamble safely every month. The BGC also emphasized their role in local economies.

The Welsh government aims to improve support for individuals with gambling addiction and is looking to strengthen regulation in the industry.

Elissa continues to manage her recovery. She avoids walking past betting shops and focuses on rebuilding her life.
