A woman from Bristol, UK, is preparing to run four marathons in four days, a remarkable feat considering she was diagnosed with a rare and serious lung disease seven years ago that initially caused a lung to collapse. Harriet Davidson, 24 at the time of her diagnosis, has lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a condition characterized by cysts in the lungs.

Understanding LAM Disease

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM, is a progressive lung disease that almost exclusively affects women. It’s caused by the abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells in the lungs, lymphatic system, and kidneys. These cells form cysts that progressively replace normal lung tissue, leading to a decline in lung function. According to Davidson, the disease is characterized by cysts in the lung.

The disease is considered rare, affecting approximately 300 women in the UK. A key factor influencing LAM progression is estrogen. The hormone can exacerbate the condition over time, accelerating the decline in lung function. Treatment options currently include medication to stabilize lung function, and in severe cases, a lung transplant may be necessary. Without treatment, the disease can lead to early death.

A Journey of Acceptance and Resilience

Davidson described a difficult period following her diagnosis, particularly during lockdown. I had a tough time coming to grips with the diagnosis at that point, being the age I was and the lockdown. I didn’t know what it meant to have a normal life again off the back of being diagnosed, she said. Initially, she struggled with denial, avoiding research about the disease because acknowledging it felt too real. In the first few months I was in denial. I didn’t want to research it, I didn’t want to know it very well because it would mean it was real.

Over time, Davidson’s perspective shifted. She now feels strong and is determined to channel her experience into something positive. Her upcoming challenge – running four marathons in four days, starting on February 25th, which also marks her third wedding anniversary – is a testament to her resilience. She hopes to bring positivity to the experience of living with LAM and demonstrate her ability to cope with the disease.

The Power of Physical Challenge in the Face of Illness

Davidson’s story echoes a broader theme of individuals using physical challenges to cope with serious health conditions. While her situation is unique due to the nature of LAM and its impact on lung function, the psychological benefits of exercise and goal-setting are well-documented. Physical activity can improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall quality of life, even for those living with chronic illnesses.

The decision to undertake such a strenuous event is not without consideration. Davidson acknowledges feeling anxious initially, but reports a growing confidence in her body’s capabilities. I feel really strong. I understand my body is capable of a lot more than I thought, she stated.

Grief and Running: A Separate, but Related Story

While Davidson’s motivation stems from living with a chronic illness, running also serves as a powerful coping mechanism for others facing profound loss. Lisa Jackson, a woman from Worthing, West Sussex, found solace in running after experiencing the deaths of her husband, sister, and father within an 18-month period. Jackson, who had previously completed 100 marathons, paused her running to spend time with her husband, Graham, only to face his terminal lung cancer diagnosis shortly after.

Jackson resumed running seven years after Graham’s death, describing it as a meditation on how to thrive in the face of trauma and a path towards a joyous, meaningful life. She has since completed 109 marathons across 22 countries and is training for her 110th. She even scattered some of her husband’s ashes while completing the Brighton Marathon, marking the 17-month period of trauma she endured.

The Importance of Support and Finding Meaning

Both Davidson and Jackson’s stories highlight the importance of finding healthy coping mechanisms and support systems when facing significant health challenges or grief. While running may not be the answer for everyone, it demonstrates the potential for physical activity to contribute to emotional and psychological well-being. The act of setting and achieving goals, pushing physical limits, and connecting with others can be incredibly empowering, particularly during difficult times.

Davidson is taking medication to stabilize her lung function and is approaching her marathon challenge with a positive mindset. Her journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that even with a serious diagnosis like LAM, We see possible to live a full and meaningful life.
