NYC subway Fire Victim Identified After Weeklong Investigation

brooklyn,NY – Debrina Kawam,a 57-year-old woman from New Jersey, has been identified as the victim of a horrific subway attack in Brooklyn last month. Kawam was tragically set on fire while asleep on a stationary train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station on December 22nd.

The new York City Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Kawam’s identity on Tuesday after using fingerprint analysis to identify her remains. the cause of death was ruled a homicide, attributed to “thermal and inhalational injuries.”

“It took a multi-agency effort with our partners in law enforcement to confirm the identity,” saeid Julie Bolcer, a spokesperson for the Medical examiner’s office.

the suspect, 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, allegedly approached Kawam while she was asleep and ignited her clothing with a lighter. He then allegedly fanned the flames with a shirt and watched the fire grow from a bench outside the subway car.

Zapeta, who claims to have no memory of the incident, was indicted by a grand jury last week on four counts of murder and one count of arson.

A City in Mourning

The gruesome attack sent shockwaves through New York City, reigniting concerns about safety on the city’s vast subway system.

“It really reinforces what I’ve been saying, people should not be living on our subway system, they should be in a place of care,” said Mayor Eric Adams at a press conference on Tuesday. “And no matter where she lived, that should not have happened.”

Adams highlighted the tragedy as a stark reminder of the need to address homelessness and provide adequate support for vulnerable individuals.

Seeking Justice

Brooklyn district Attorney Eric Gonzalez emphasized the importance of identifying kawam to notify her family and bring them closure.

“It’s a priority for me,for my office, for the police department to identify this woman,so we can notify her family,” Gonzalez said in the early stages of the investigation.

False facts and an AI-generated image of Kawam circulated online in the aftermath of the attack, adding to the tragedy. However, an outpouring of support for the then-unidentified victim emerged, including a vigil held in her honor.

Zapeta, who is originally from Guatemala, was deported from the US in 2018 and later re-entered the country illegally, according to immigration authorities. He is due back in court on January 7th.

Subway Safety Concerns Persist

Despite a recent decline in crime rates on the subway, the attack on Kawam is one of several incidents that have raised concerns about safety on America’s largest mass transit system.

just hours after Kawam’s identification was announced, another disturbing incident occured on the subway. An unidentified male was pushed onto the tracks in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, sustaining a head injury. Police have detained a suspect in connection with this incident. These recent events underscore the ongoing challenges facing the MTA and city officials as they work to ensure the safety and security of millions of daily subway riders.

Subway Fire Tragedy: A Conversation

Jane: Did you hear about that horrific incident on the subway last month? It makes the evening news even more depressing these days.

Michael: I did, Jane. It was absolutely dreadful. Setting someone on fire while they’re sleeping? I can’t even begin to imagine the horror of that.

Jane: Exactly! And they finally identified the victim. Her name was Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old woman from New Jersey.

Michael: That’s just awful. How could someone do something so cruel?

Jane: The suspect, Sebastian zapeta, has been indicted on murder and arson charges.Apparently, he approached her while she was asleep on the train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station and set her clothes on fire wiht a lighter. Can you imagine?

michael: I remember hearing about it, but they couldn’t identify her for over a week. It was heartbreaking to think of her family going through that, not knowing what happened to their loved one.

Jane: You’re right. It was incredibly difficult for them. Thankfully, the Medical Examiner was able to identify her using fingerprint analysis.

Michael: What was the official cause of death, do you know?

Jane: Thermal and inhalational injuries.Imagine the pain she must have endured.

Michael: It’s truly sickening. They say he even fanned the flames with a shirt and watched as she burned.

Jane: absolutely horrific. And to make things worse, there was so much misinformation circulating online, even a fake picture of her.

Michael: That’s just awful. It seems like there’s no regard for human decency anymore.

Jane: I know. It’s scary to think something like that could happen anywhere, anytime. It really makes you question your own safety on public transportation.

Michael: It does. Mayor Adams, even, said we need to address the issue of homelessness and provide better care for vulnerable individuals. He even mentioned this tragedy as a reason we need to act.

Jane: It’s a complex issue, for sure. But you’re right, no one deserves to be in a situation where they’re sleeping on a subway and susceptible to such a terrible act.
