This disparity isn’t simply due to women living longer; biological, genetic, and social factors all contribute to this complex issue.
Biological and Genetic Factors
Several biological factors are believed to play a role. The APOE ε4 gene,the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease,has a more pronounced effect in women. Research suggests that estrogen loss during menopause may contribute to cognitive decline, impacting brain metabolism and synaptic plasticity. Moreover, the presence of two X chromosomes in women, compared to men’s single X chromosome, can influence the expression of genes related to brain health.
