Lower Tackle Height Reduces Head contacts in Women’s Rugby
A recent study indicates that lowering the legal tackle height in women’s rugby has proven effective in minimizing head contacts among players. The research, a world-first of its kind, highlights the positive impact of this rule change on player safety.
The study, conducted in Scotland, examined the effects of altered tackle height regulations in women’s community rugby. Researchers found a direct correlation between the new rules and a reduction in head-to-head and head-to-shoulder impacts.
The analysis compared over 11,000 tackles from the 2022-23 season (before the rule change) and the 2023-24 season (after implementation). The results showed a notable shift in tackling techniques.
Experts observed a 21% decrease in upright tackles and a 34% increase in players bending at the waist during tackles. This bent-waist technique is recommended to lessen contact with the head and shoulders, areas prone to injury.
The University of Edinburgh, in partnership with Scottish Rugby and World Rugby, analyzed video to assess the impact of the lowered tackle height law. World Rugby, the sport’s governing body, introduced the change to enhance player safety in community rugby.

Dr. Debbie Palmer, also of Moray House School of Education and Sport, noted that this study is the first to evaluate the impact of a lowered tackle height in community women’s rugby. She said that it is good to see, similar to the men’s community study, that initial results are encouraging.
