McCaughan’s Century Leads hawks to T20 Victory; Essex Falls Short

Lizelle McCaughan’s explosive batting display, highlighted by a century, powered the Hawks to a Twenty20 victory. Essex, despite a spirited effort, couldn’t chase down the target.
Essex elected to field first after winning the toss, but an early chance to dismiss McCaughan was missed when Lauren Winfield-Hill dropped a catch. Maia Bouchier was dismissed early, caught by Maddie Penna off Grace Scrivens for four runs.
Knott joined McCaughan and also benefited from a missed stumping opportunity. McCaughan capitalized,reaching her half-century off 39 balls. She then surpassed Bouchier’s previous high score of 92 in the competition with a reverse sweep.
McCaughan reached her century from 57 deliveries before being caught out off Scrivens in the final over, ending a 173-run partnership with Knott. Knott remained unbeaten on 72,while Freya Kemp added a quick five runs.
In reply, Essex reached 46 without loss in the powerplay, with Scrivens and Winfield-Hill finding the boundary. Though, Winfield-Hill was then caught by Knott off Daisy Gibb for 18. Lissy Macleod then entered.
Scrivens was then out, miscuing a shot to Adams for 29. Knott then took a catch to dismiss cordelia Griffith. Mary Taylor then took two quick wickets, including Penna lbw for one. Macleod was run out for 30.
Despite a late effort from Jo Gardner and Sophia Smale, Essex fell short.Smale was out lbw for 24,and Gardner was caught for 18. Adams finished with 4-26, restricting Essex to 153-8.
What’s next
with this victory, the Hawks leapfrog Essex in the table, positioning themselves for a strong finish to the season. They are now three points behind the Bears with a game in hand.
